Jem

There are 2.7 billion frontline employees globally and an estimated 1.1 billion in developing markets. These employees do not use traditional digital channels like email or apps. Equally, despite making up 80% of the world’s workforce, only 1% of existing HR enterprise technology caters for frontline, deskless employees. As a result, these employees are unengaged and disconnected from their employers, leading to low job satisfaction and low employee retention rates.

Enter Jem HR: Jem super-powers a businesses HR administration by focusing on digitally connecting the majority of an employer’s workforce using the most used messaging app in the world – WhatsApp. By doing this, HR professionals are able to save time, reduce costs and unlock employee engagement. Jem’s all-in-one product suite sits on top of existing software, and includes payslip, timesheet and roster distribution and fair financial products.

Supporting Media Partners

Creamer media

Creamer Media was launched by journalist Martin Creamer on Friday 13 of March 1981. Creamer Media’s first title was a fortnightly newspaper called Engineering News. It soon became a very successful weekly newspaper increasingly well-respected by industrial and mining decision-makers as a crucial source of business news and information. In the 1990s, Mining Weekly was launched as an additional publication distributed each week with Engineering News. With the advent of the internet and digital media, the daily news sites EngineeringNews. co.za, MiningWeekly.com, ResearchChannel.com and Polity.org.za were all launched in the early 2000s – at the same time the weekly newspapers Engineering News and Mining Weekly were redesigned into a news magazine format.

African OS&H

Our story begins in 1932. Sir Ernest Oppenheimer Chairman of Anglo American was becoming increasingly alarmed by the high rates of fatalities and injuries on his labour intensive mines. It was a larger problem than he could tackle alone, so he called a meeting with the major of Johannesburg Mr DF Corlett who was known to be public spirited. The mayor agreed to assist on the condition that their initiatives include general industry which was suffering from the same pitfalls.
Road safety was another area of concern, with too many accidents caused by congestion on the streets from the mingling of pedestrians, bicycles and cars due to the growing car population.
After consultation with other interested parties, it was agreed that the best starting point would be through education and awareness, and a vehicle was needed as a conduit for dissemination of this information.
And so it was that the Safety First Association was born in 1932 with Jan Smuts as its first patron. The aims of this fledgling association would be achieved through publishing informative literature such as posters, flyers and a magazine titled National Safety. In 2020 the title of the magazine changed to AFRICAN OS&H, due to a changing landscape.
